The goal
and premise of VIMA LUPWA HOME is the “whole village” approach,
rather than being institutionalized in an orphanage, this is a
home for children where they are raised in their own culture, in
a home parented by a Zambian couple; education is in the Zambian
community along with the other children of Mikomfwa, eating
typical Zambian food and speaking their own language – all in an
effort to empower them in their own culture and to become
self-sustaining leaders/members of their community.
"Therefore, we pledge to bind
ourselves to one another . . . to feed our starving, to clothe
our ragged, to do all good things, knowing that we are more than
keepers of our brothers and sisters. We are our brothers and
sisters."
Maya Angelou
